Winter Carnival in celebration of Francophonie Month takes place in Red Deer this March

Feb 22, 2024 | 3:21 PM

The Association Canadienne Française de l’Alberta (ACFA) Régionale de Red Deer will be holding their annual Winter Carnival this March, in celebration of Francophonie Month.

The free Carnival will be held on March 2 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. in the parking lot of École La Prairie (4810 34 St.).

The Alberta government proclaimed the month in 2018, with a Franco-Albertan flag consisting of the provincial emblems; Quebec’s fleur-de-lis and Alberta’s rose.

The Winter Carnival in Red Deer will begin with a flag raising in the gymnasium, before heading to a variety of activities including face painting, a campfire, traditional French food like maple taffy, and live music by Jake Matthews and the student choir.

“The purpose of the event is to bring people together. It’s not just reserved for francophone people; it’s open to everyone. We just want to develop that community in Red Deer that is growing and growing. We are getting more people and it’s just to ensure they are not alone, and they know there are people and resources to help them. Most of all, it’s just to have a good time,” said Mael Crespo, volunteer for the Association.

Nathalie Belkhiter, Red Deer ACFA Regional Director, said there are roughly 2,500 francophones in the city.
