Rebels lose back-to-back games against the Oil Kings

In a rematch, the Red Deer Rebels lost 3-1 against the Edmonton Oil Kings on Saturday night at Rogers Place.

Last night at home, the Rebels also lost 3-1 to the Oil Kings.

The game took a slow start with just a few power play opportunities on either side in the first period, but no goals scored. The Rebels outshot the Oil Kings 11-8 after 20 minutes.

Edmonton opened the scoreboard at 4:36 of the second period when Cole Miller scored on Red Deer goaltender Chase Wutzke.

The home team now 1-0, they also outshot the visitors 16-7 in the middle frame.

In the final period, the Oil Kings doubled their lead to 2-0 when Gracyn Sawchyn scored at 7:12.

However, at 16:42 the Rebels’ Carson Birnie scored from the low slot off a bounce on Oil Kings netminder Hudson Perry. His 13th goal of the season was assisted by Ollie Josephson and Matteo Fabrizi, cutting their deficit in half to 2-1.

With Red Deer pulling out goaltender Wutzke in the final two and a half minutes of regulation, it was to their disadvantage when Edmonton’s Adam Jecho scored an empty netter with eight seconds left to go.

The Oil Kings would win 3-1, with the Rebels outshooting them in the third period 13-12.

The Rebels remain in third place of the Central Division with a record of 28-18-2-6 while the Oil Kings are in last place at 17-31-2-1.

The Rebels will play the Lethbridge Hurricanes at the Peavey Mart Centrium on Monday, with a special Family Day “Paint the Ice” event following the game. It will also be Sockey Day in support of the United Way Central Alberta, where fans can either toss a pair of socks on the ice for donation or will receive a pair of their own. Puck drop is at 2 p.m. with the broadcast live at 1:30 p.m. on 106.7 REWIND radio.
