Feb 7, 2024 | 10:44 AM

Red Deer Polytechnic has announced its RDP Athletes of the Week:

1. Jenna Sellen

Hometown: Oakbank, MB

Bachelor of Education (1st year)

Forward Jenna Sellen and the Queens Hockey team had a light week with just one scheduled game against the Olds College Broncos this past Thursday. RDP headed into this matchup outscoring their opponents 23-3 in 2024 with two shutouts in as many games. After her teammate Kyla Hansel opened the scoring in the first period, Sellen crashed the net and finished off a beautiful pass from forward Alli Soyko for the Oakbank native’s first goal of the game. The Queens would add two more in the period to take a 4-0 lead into the final 20 minutes of play.

After her linemate Rylee Mepham caused a turnover in the Broncos’ zone, Sellen picked up the loose puck and lifted it over the Olds College goaltender’s glove for her second goal of the game. RDP would add one more in the third and walked away with a 6-0 victory which was the team’s third consecutive shutout. The first-year Bachelor of Education student-athlete was named the player of the game following the win.

These two goals by Sellen ended a six-game point and goal drought for the rookie. She now has four goals and six assists for a total of 10 points in 18 games played this season. Sellen and the Queens will return to the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre this Friday as they face off against the SAIT Trojans at 7 pm.

2. Tom Wass

Hometown: Adelaide, Australia

Open Studies (4th year)

Tom Wass and the Kings Volleyball team clashed with the Briercrest College Clippers this weekend for the first time since the teams faced off in the ACAC Championship Final just under a year ago where the Clippers walked away with a four-set victory. On Friday night, the Kings came up short in their avenge attempt as they fell in four sets yet again. Wass ran an efficient offence as he finished with 41 assists in the loss which is his second-highest total this season with 51 being his season high. The Australian also had four kills and six digs in the loss.

But on Saturday afternoon, Wass and the Kings were finally able to get their revenge as they defeated the Clippers in straight sets which moved RDP closer to clinching the top spot in the South Division. The fourth-year setter had 36 assists in the win to finish the weekend averaging over 10 assists per set which is well over his season average of 7.94. The team finished with a 42 per cent kill efficiency on Saturday which was 17 points higher than their percentage on Friday.

The fourth-year student-athlete holds the all-time RDP Kings Volleyball record for assists. After this weekend, Wass has a total of 2,693 assists which puts him second all-time in the ACAC. The Australian is 606 away from tying the conference record. Wass and the Kings will be on the road for the remainder of the season with their lone match this week taking place in Camrose as they battle with the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings at 8 pm on Saturday.
