Rebels end eastern road trip with 4-3 loss to Broncos

Feb 6, 2024 | 10:09 PM

The Red Deer Rebels end their eastern road trip with a 4-3 loss against the Swift Current Broncos at InnovationPlex Tuesday night.

The Rebels lost all five games, with two in shootout.

With the Rebels’ Hunter Mayo sent to the penalty box early in the first period for tripping, the Broncos’ Conor Geekie scored on Red Deer netminder Chase Wutzke at 1:37. The power play goal put the home team in the lead 1-0.

Midway through the period, Swift Current’s Peyton Kettles scored a goal, doubling their lead 2-0.

The Broncos were outshooting the Rebels by triple (18-6) after 20 minutes of play.

The tables turned in the second period when Red Deer’s Kalan Lind scored at the first minute with a rebound from the low slot off Swift Current’s goaltender Reid Dyck. His 11th goal of the season was assisted by Talon Brigley, putting the team on the scoreboard 2-1 behind the Broncos.

Shortly after at 5:31, the Rebels’ Ollie Josephson tapped in his seventh goal this season through the back door. With Brigley and Lind getting the apples, the game was now tied 2-2.

But at 11:51 the Broncos regained their lead 3-2 when Geekie scored his second goal of the game.

This time the Rebels outshot the Broncos 10-3 in the middle frame.

Swift Current’s Geekie earned a hat trick, scoring early once again in the final period within the first two minutes of regulation. The home team was now ahead 4-2.

However, Red Deer’s Kai Uchacz managed to slip in a goal from inside the crease. After some debate, his 34th goal this season was allowed, with Matthew Gard and Mats Lindgren claiming the assists. The Rebels were just behind the Broncos by one goal at 4-3.

Pulling out Rebels goaltender Wutzke for the final minute and a half of the period, it was not enough to tie the game.

Red Deer greatly outshot Swift Current in the third period 20-6.
