Rebels fall 6-3 to fall two points behind Warriors in playoff race

Feb 3, 2024 | 9:11 PM

The Red Deer Rebels lost their second straight game in regulation Saturday, after having their 13-game point streak snapped on Friday.

On the road in Moose Jaw, the Rebels fell 6-3 to the Warriors Saturday in what was their second of three games in as many nights, and the teams’ third meeting this season.

With the win, Moose Jaw holds the season series advantage with two wins. The teams will play once more this regular season, on Feb. 9, and it’s going to be a meaningful one.

The two points for Moose Jaw Saturday mean they leap two points ahead of Red Deer for sole possession of third place in the Eastern Conference standings. Red Deer remains with 60 point, two behind Medicine Hat — who also lost in regulation tonight — for first in the Central Division.

Moose Jaw and Red Deer each have 20 games left, and Medicine Hat 19.

Scoring summary

Red Deer broke the ice in this one when Jeramiah Roberts (3rd) scored just 2:50 in.

Martin Rysavy (16th) tied it up at 13:59; then with the man advantage, Matthew Savoie (16th) put Moose Jaw ahead at 18:24, and the Warriors led 2-1 after 20 minutes.

In the middle frame, Rysavy (17th) added another at 10:21, and Jagger Firkus (39th) potted a shorty — the eventual game-winner — at 18:00 for a commanding 4-1 lead through two periods.

Early in the third, Rebels captain Kai Uchacz (30th) notched a power play marker at 6:22, but Brayden Schuurman (14th) got it back only 46 seconds later to restore the three-goal lead at 5-2 Warriors.

At 9:44 of the third, Atley Calvert (30th) made it 6-2 home team and it was all but over.

Carson Birnie (10th) got one back for the Rebels though, with 100 seconds left on the clock.

Final score: 6-3 for the Jaw.

Between the pipes, the WHL Goaltender of the Month two months running, Chase Wutzke, was yanked after 40 minutes, allowing four goals on 26 shots. Rhett Stoesser stopped seven of nine in relief. At the other end, Jackson Unger made 23 saves on 26 shots for the win.
