2023 Investiture of Lifesaving Honours

Various Albertans were awarded in rescue and service last week for brave acts that saved lives, with one incident taking place in Pigeon Lake.

The Lifesaving Society’s annual 2023 Investiture of Lifesaving Honours award ceremony was held on January 26 at Government House in Edmonton, with over 60 people in attendance, including award recipients, guests, and local MLAs and MPs to personally congratulate their constituents.

The Society provides programs, products and services to prevent drowning and water-related injuries.

Officials say that on August 7, 2021, Poplar Bay on Pigeon Lake was hit by a sudden and severe storm.

They state Brandon Provost had been out on a small motorboat when the storm began brewing. On his way back to shore, he noticed his neighbours, Chad Brown and his five-year-old daughter Cora, in the water with their Sea-Doo drifting away from them.

While trying to keep Cora’s head above the massive waves, they say Chad had begun to suffer from a heart attack.

Despite the dangers that the waves posed to his small boat, Prevost braved the storm to rescue them.

For his quick response and outstanding efforts, he was awarded the Lifesaving Society Canada Rescue Commendation.

Searle Turton, MLA for Spruce Grove-Stony Plain, was also present for Prevost’s award presentation.

Other Recue Award recipients for 2023 include:

  • Celia Schnell and Simone Pfleger (Devon): Rescue of Nisha Deepumon
  • Nathan Beardmore and Matthew Pequeno (Grande Prairie): Rescue of an unnamed male
  • Carol Henke (Calgary): Rescue of a young girl from Elbow River

Service Award recipients for 2023 include:

  • Service Commendation: Brad Dryer (Cochrane), Cody Dunne (Calgary), and Victoria Mitchell (Edmonton)
  • Service Medal: Candice McMillan (Hinton) and Jeremy Todgham (Hinton)
  • Service Cross: Tanya Jones (Okotoks)
