‘Roll Over, Beethoven’ from the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra hits Bo’s Feb. 25

Jan 31, 2024 | 2:49 PM

This Feb. 25, experience the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra (RDSO) within the intimate confines of Bo’s Bar & Stage when the group presents Roll Over, Beethoven.

The show, which will feature a mixture of classical orchestral music with poppy 80s tunes, runs from 8-10 p.m. Tickets are available here, starting at $15 plus tax.

“This show is unique because it’s part of our Community Concert Series and these concerts are a way for us to take some of the music that you would hear in RDSO main concerts and bring them to new venues, and places you don’t normally hear or wouldn’t expect to hear classical music,” says Matthew Whitfield, RDSO Marketing and Community Connections Coordinator.

Jennette Miller, RDSO Executive Director, says the community series of concerts is a great way to break down stereotypes for those unfamiliar with orchestral performances.

“There’s this stereotype that there are a lot of protocols to follow. People are not sure about what to wear, when to clap, how to react to the music when they’re sitting in the concert hall. There’s this perception that you have to sit for a very long time, very quietly,” she says.

“Bringing what we do out of the concert hall helps us focus on what really matters, which is the music instead of all of these details that really at the end of the day don’t matter. It’s a way to break down those barriers.”

As for what you can expect from this show, the pair guarantee it’ll be lots of fun, especially if you love 80s music.

Roll Over, Beethoven is obviously an homage to the Chuck Berry song [from 1956], which we’re not doing, funny enough, but it’s basically a combination of Classical music and popular music all performed by a string quartet,” Whitfield explains.

“You’ll hear some movements from Beethoven’s string quartets; these are some of the best string quartets in the repertoire. They are beautiful and performed very often. They’re little masterpieces by themselves and those will be performed alongside some 80s pop classics that are arranged by Music Director Claude Lapalme.”

This RDSO community concert is funded in part by the City of Red Deer. Pattison Media, including rdnewsNOW, is also a proud partner.
