Sentencing scheduled in fatal Red Deer hit and run involving pedestrian

Sentencing is scheduled next month for a man charged in a fatal hit and run involving a pedestrian in Red Deer last year.

Carter Austin Mather, 21, of Red Deer, is scheduled for sentencing in Red Deer Court of Justice on Feb. 9, 2024.

It was on Sept. 17, 2023, at 9:07 p.m., when Red Deer RCMP were called to 4217 50 Ave. to assist with a pedestrian collision.

Mounties say the 32-year-old male pedestrian from Red Deer, died as a result of his injuries. The victim’s name, however, was not released.

RCMP charged Carter Mather with the following:

  • Failure to stop after an accident resulting in death

One person is dead following a collision between a vehicle and pedestrian in downtown Red Deer Sunday night.

On Sept. 17, 2023, at 9:07 p.m., Red Deer RCMP were called to 4217 50 Ave. to assist with a collision between a pedestrian and motor vehicle.

RCMP arrived to the location with both Fire and EMS already on scene.

Mounties say witnesses reported that a vehicle was driving southbound on Gaetz Avenue, when it collided with a pedestrian. The driver of the vehicle fled from the scene.

According to police, the 32-year-old, male pedestrian from Red Deer, died as a result of his injuries.

RCMP say the driver of the vehicle turned themselves into police and has since been arrested. Mounties say charges are pending against the driver.
