Province lending Alberta’s non-profits a helping hand

Alberta’s government says it is helping non-profit organizations deliver programming that strengthens communities and makes a difference in Albertans’ lives.

Through the Community Initiatives Program, officials say the government is providing $9.9 million to 260 non-profit organizations that aim to help Albertans access diverse social, cultural and recreational opportunities in their communities.

The government says project-based funding through the program can support initiatives such as new programming and events, commercial vehicle purchases, website development, technology enhancements and marketing. Officials note, projects must address an immediate community-identified need and demonstrate broad community involvement and impact.

“Alberta is home to some of the strongest volunteering in Canada, and I’m proud Alberta’s government can be your partner in building stronger communities,” says Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women. “Thank you to all of the community and non-profit groups across the province whose work helps empower Albertans, connects them with their neighbours and provides spaces for learning and community.”

One of the non-profits receiving a grant is the Famous 5 Foundation, an organization dedicated to inspiring women to become leaders within their communities. Officials say the Community Initiatives Program is also providing funding to other initiatives including a crowdfunding platform, volunteer screening and Alberta Culture Days.

The government says operating grants through the program support non-profits working to deliver services to vulnerable and disadvantaged Albertans.

“The Famous 5 Foundation is very grateful for the CIP grant, which Minister Tanya Fir and her colleagues have given us to organize a national celebration of the Alberta-led ‘Persons Case’ – the first significant international legal declaration of the principle of equality,” shares Pritha Kalar, chair, Famous 5 Foundation.

“The Alberta Council of Disability Services appreciates this funding, which will directly support improving and streamlining access to our online training programs for the Community Disability Services (CDS) sector. This training is essential towards building the CDS sector’s capacity to deliver quality supports to Albertans with developmental disabilities,” states Clova Lehr, director of accreditation and services, Alberta Council of Disability Services.
