UPDATE: Alert Cancelled, Emergency Alert issued for Minburn County as fire burns at oil lease site

UPDATE: Jan. 30, 2024, 7:06 p.m.

Emergency Crews have the fire at an oil lease site located 23 km southeast of Mannville under control. Officials say there is no longer any toxic smoke being released from the fire.

Area: This alert is no longer in effect for everyone in the area between Hwy 41 and Hwy 870; south of Vermillion or Innisfree, and north of Wainwright.

A critical emergency alert has been issued for the County of Minburn Tuesday evening, Jan. 30.

The County of Minburn is located east of Edmonton.

“There is an out of control fire at an oil lease site located 23 km southeast of Mannville. Crude oil is burning, and toxic smoke is being produced. The smoke is dangerous if inhaled,” the alert says.

Affected areas:

  • Irma
  • Beaver County
  • Vermilion River County No. 24
  • Wainwright No. 61
  • Minburn County No. 27
  • Minburn
  • Vermilion
  • Flagstaff County
  • Innisfree
  • Mannville
  • Wainwright

Action to take:

  • Shelter in place immediately
  • Go inside and close all windows and doors
  • If driving, close windows and vents and leave the area
  • No evacuation is required at this time, but prepare for a possible evacuation later tonight
  • Gather clothes, documents, and medications you will need in case an evacuation is required
