Queens Hockey is back at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre Arena this weekend with two home games as they welcome the Medicine Hat College Rattlers Women’s Hockey team. On the men’s side, the Kings will be on the road in Lac la Biche for a two-game set against the Portage College Voyageurs.

In basketball, the Kings and Queens will start their weekend on the road in Calgary but will be back in Red Deer on Saturday for their rematch against the St. Mary’s University Lightning. The women will start things off at 6 pm with the men to follow.

Lastly, the Polytechnic’s Indoor Track team will make their season debut this Saturday as they compete at Running Room Grand Prix #1 hosted by the Concordia University Lightning at the Kinsmen Sport Centre in Edmonton.

Hockey

Medicine Hat College Rattlers (0-16) at Queens (13-4)

• Friday, January 26 | 7 pm

• Saturday, January 27 | 1 pm

After a weekend off, the Queens Hockey will be back in action this weekend as they host the Medicine Hat College Rattlers for the first time in program history with the Rattlers just entering the ACAC this season.

The Queens are coming off a tough 1-0 loss against the Lakeland College Rustlers a couple of weeks ago. But they hold a perfect 3-0 record against Medicine Hat College this season. In those three games, RDP has outscored the Rattlers 15-3 with forwards Alli Soyko (Bachelor of Education) and Jenna Sellen (Bachelor of Education) combining for a total of eight points.

As the Queens look to get back into the win column, the Rattlers will be looking for their first win of the season this Friday and Saturday at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Arena. The puck will drop at 7 pm on Friday with the game starting on Saturday at 1 pm.

Kings (9-7) at Portage College Voyageurs (1-13)

• Friday, January 26 | 7 pm

• Saturday, January 27 | 1 pm

The Kings will be looking to extend their winning streak of four games this weekend but they will have to do it on the road as they travel out to Lac la Biche to battle with the Portage College Voyageurs this weekend.

RDP and their offence have been rolling since the start of the 2024 calendar year as they have outscored their opponent 26-15 in four games. Earlier in the season, the Voyageurs were defeated by the Kings in back-to-back games. In those two wins, forward Erik Miller (Bachelor of Business Administration) scored a hat trick while adding two assists to complete a five point weekend for the third-year forward.

The Kings put their winning streak on the line starting on Friday at 7 pm with the rematch set for 1 pm on Saturday.

Basketball

Queens (13-1) vs St. Mary’s University Lightning (10-5)

• Friday, January 26 | 6 pm in Calgary

• Saturday, January 27 | 6 pm in Red Deer

After a week’s hiatus, Queens Basketball will be back in Red Deer as they tip off with the St. Mary’s University Lightning for a home-and-home series starting in Calgary on Friday night.

It has been quite some time since these two teams have faced off with the last time being the season opener way back in October of 2022. A lot of basketball has been played and a lot of changes have happened, specifically with the Queens’ team since they dropped back-to-back games against the Lightning.

Nonetheless, with St. Mary’s and the Polytechnic near the top of the South Division, both teams will be in for a test starting on Friday at 6 pm with the rematch in Red Deer starting at 6 pm as well.

Kings (11-3) vs St. Mary’s University Lightning (13-2)

• Friday, January 26 | 8 pm in Calgary

• Saturday, January 27 | 8 pm in Red Deer

The Kings will be looking to get back into their winning groove after splitting their weekend against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers this past weekend.

The Polytechnic was able to bounce back on Saturday afternoon with a bounce but not before they lost in overtime on Friday. With this loss, the Kings are tied for second place in the South Division. The team that is in first place, the St. Mary’s University Lightning, will be their opponent this weekend. The Lightning just lost their second game of the season against the SAIT Trojans this past Friday but managed to bounce back with a win on Saturday.

Last season, St. Mary’s University won back-to-back games against the Kings but like the women’s games, it is going to be a fight right to the final whistle for both the victories.

The Kings’ games will start following the conclusion of the Queens’ games this weekend.

Kings and Queens Indoor Track

January 27 hosted by Concordia University at the Kinsmen Sport Centre

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Indoor Track teams will make their season debut this Saturday at Running Room Grand Prix #1 in Edmonton hosted by the Concordia University Thunder at the Kinsmen Sport Centre.

Last season, the Queens were able to hold first place from the sound of the gun right until the end of the championships which led to the team winning their first banner in program history. They will look to defend their title this season.

On the men’s side, the Kings will be looking to improve on last season’s fourth place finish that saw them miss the podium by just a couple of points.

Stayed tuned for the weekend recap for the results of the first grand prix of the season. For more information on the Indoor Track team, check out the season preview.
