Volleyball

Medicine Hat College Rattlers (0-11) at Queens (12-3)

• Friday, January 19 | 6 pm

• Saturday, January 20 | 1 pm

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens won six straight sets on their way to sweeping the season series against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers this past weekend. On Friday night, the Queens made quick work of the Rattlers by defeating the visitors in three sets in just over an hour. Middle-blocker Raya Roesler (Practical Nurse Diploma) had a lights out match as she finished with 13 kills and was later named the player of the match.

On Saturday afternoon, the Queens faced a little more pushback from the Rattlers but managed to not drop a set and finished the weekend with another three-set victory to bump their record up to 12-3 on the season. The player of the match was awarded to outside-hitter Jaiden Ferguson who led the match with 10 kills in the win.

Medicine Hat College Rattlers (2-9) at Kings (13-2)

• Friday, January 19 | 8 pm

• Saturday, January 20 | 3 pm

The Kings backed up the Queens’ performance with a straight-set victory over the Rattlers as well on Friday evening. In what was an offensive-less match, lefty and outside-hitter Carter Hills (Bachelor of Kinesiology) was named the player of the game with five kills and one block.

A day later, the Kings also faced more pushback from the Rattlers as RDP dropped the second set 28-26. But the Kings would bounce back to take the third and fourth sets to complete the weekend sweep of Medicine Hat College. Outside-hitter Colby Nemeth had an outstanding match out of the left-side and back row positions as he finished with a team-high 14 kills in the win.

Hockey

Kings (9-7) vs Concordia University Thunder (3-10)

• Friday, January 19 | 7 pm in Red Deer

• Saturday, January 20 | 7 pm in Edmonton

The Kings continued their winning ways on Friday night as goaltender Arik Weersink (Kinesiology and Sports Studies) backstopped his team to a 3-0 shutout victory while steering aside all 31 shots he faced. He was later named the player of the game. Forward Jacob Wozney (Bachelor of Education) scored a powerplay and shorthanded goal in the win with teammate Holden Knights (Business Certificate) scoring the game-winner six minutes into the game.

Despite being down 4-3 going into the third period, the Kings would score four unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes of play to defeat the Thunder in back-to-back games. Forward Jaxon Steele (Bachelor of Kinesiology) was named the player of the game as he finished with two goals and one assist in the win while his teammate Ryland McNinch (Bachelor of Education) had three assists on the night.

Basketball

Queens (13-1) at Medicine Hat College Rattlers (2-12)

• Saturday, January 20 | 1 pm

The Queens have restarted their winning streak as they have now won three games in a row with their two road victories against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers this past weekend. On Friday evening, guard Tricia Madourie (Open Studies) dropped all of her 13 points in the second half before being named the player of the game in the Queens 79-42 victory.

On the following day, forward Janai Hubert put up a career-high 31 points in her team’s 88-38 victory with 15 of those points coming in the fourth quarter. She was awarded the player of the game.

Kings (11-3) at Medicine Hat College Rattlers (3-11)

• Saturday, January 20 | 3 pm

It was a tough weekend for the Kings as they split their doubleheader against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The Kings dropped their second game in a row on Friday night in Medicine Hat with the Rattlers defeating RDP 90-87 in overtime. The Rattlers thought they had won it in regulation but the referees determined the three-point shot was made after the horn blew which meant the game needed overtime. Centre Jose Mauro (Business Certificate) finished with a team-high 23 points in the loss and was named the player of the game.

But the Kings bounced back on Saturday afternoon with an 88-76 victory to push their record to 11-3 on the season. Guard Efe Iyamu was named the player of the game as he finished with a team-high 19 points in the victory.

Kings and Queens Curling (Winter Regional Bonspiel)

January 19-21 hosted by NAIT at the Thistle Curling Club in Edmonton

It was quite the weekend for the RDP Mixed Curling team as they went a perfect 6-0 record at the Winter Regional hosted by the NAIT Ooks at the Thistle Curling Club in Edmonton.

The Polytechnic started out with a commanding 6-2 victory over the SAIT Trojans on Friday night. On Saturday, all four players on the team had a long day as they curled for 14 hours and played in four draws.

They managed to defeat the Concordia University Thunder (12-5), the Trojans again (13-7), the Lakeland College Rustlers (6-4) and the Ooks (5-2). Capping off the perfect weekend, the Mixed team defeated the Rustlers yet again with a 7-4 final.

On the women’s side, the Queens finished their weekend with a 4-2 record. They started out their weekend winning three straight as they defeated the Ooks (13-0), the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings (7-5) and the Rustlers (10-1). But they fell into a slump as they were defeated by the Trojans (5-4) and the Thunder (9-2) in back-to-back draws. The Queens were able to bounce back and finish off the bonspiel with a huge 5-0 victory over the Portage College Voyageurs.

Lastly, on the men’s side, the Kings started their weekend with a commanding 8-2 victory against the Vikings. But would fall in three straight with the Ooks (5-4), Rustlers (7-5) and Trojans (6-4) all defeating the Kings. In a must-win scenario, the Kings defeated the Thunder 9-4 to end the weekend with a 2-3 record to qualify for the ACAC Championships.

The Queens and Mixed teams also qualified for the championships that will be hosted by the SAIT Trojans from February 23-25 at the Avonari Curling Club in Airdrie.

Up next for the Polytechnic will be the ACAC Championships which will be hosted by the SAIT Trojans at the Avonair Curling Club in Airdrie from February 23-25.
