Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics weekend recap

It was quite a busy weekend with the Kings and Queens finishing off with an 8-4 record in RDP’s first weekend back in action after the break that saw games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Both basketball teams split their doubleheader with the Lethbridge Kodiaks. Guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal (Educational Assistant) is now in sole possession of the all-time Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Steal record as she finished her weekend with nine steals on Saturday to give her 354 in her career which is nine more than the previous record which was held by Shea-Lynn Noyes of the NAIT Ooks.

In the other court sport, the Kings managed to get back in the win column and finished their weekend with back-to-back victories while the Queens defeated the Keyano College Huskies in three sets on Saturday evening but were defeated by the Lakeland College Rustlers on Sunday.

On the ice, the Queens split their weekend series with the Lakeland College Rustlers and the Kings combined for 16 goals in their two victories against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings this past weekend

Basketball

Lethbridge College Kodiaks (9-2) at Queens (11-1)

• Friday, January 12 | 6 pm

The Queens undefeated season came to an end on Friday as they were defeated by the Lethbridge College Kodiaks 63-53. This ended their 10-game winning streak. Guard Heena Sidhu (Bachelor of Arts in Multidisciplinary Studies) was awarded the player of the game. She finished with 10 points and four rebounds in the loss.

But the Queens bounced back on Saturday afternoon and split their weekend series against the Kodiaks with a 70-55 victory. This win kept RDP in sole possession of first place in the South Division. Guard Sandra Garcia-Bernal was awarded the player of the game as she finished with a team-high 20 points as well as nine steals which put her in the ACAC record book.

Lethbridge College Kodiaks (6-5) at Kings (10-2)

• Friday, January 12 | 8 pm

• Saturday, January 13 | 3 pm

It was a different story on Friday evening for the Kings as they were able to defeat the Kodiaks 89-75 in their first of two games against one another this past weekend. Guard Bernardo Moller (Business Certificate) finished with a team-high 23 points in the win.

But the following afternoon, the Kings dropped just their second game all season as they were defeated 101-87 by the Kodiaks. Guard Efe Iyamu (Open Studies) finished with 19 points in the loss.

With this loss, the Kings now sit tied with the SAIT Trojans for second place in the South Division.

Volleyball

Queens (10-3) vs Keyano College Huskies (5-8)

• Saturday, January 13 | 6 pm in Red Deer

Queens (10-3) vs Lakeland College Rustlers (10-1)

• Sunday, January 14 | 3:30 pm in Red Deer

The Queens got off to a great start to their second half of the season with a straight sets victory (25-18, 25-15, 25-18) over the Keyano College Huskies on Saturday night in Red Deer. Libero Frankie Sandini (Justice Studies) played a great match on the defensive side of the game as she finished with 14 digs in the three sets and was awarded the player of the match for her efforts.

But on a rare Sunday evening match, the Queens offence came up empty and fell in straight sets (18-25, 20-25, 15-25) to the Lakeland College Rustlers who are the defending ACAC and National Champions. Outside-hitter Jaiden Ferguson (Business Administration) had a team-high 10 kills in the loss and was later named the player of the match for the Queens.

With this split weekend, the Queens still hold down first place in the South Division with a 10-3 record.

Kings (11-2) vs Keyano College Huskies (10-3)

• Saturday, January 13 | 8 pm in Red Deer

Kings (11-2) vs Lakeland College Rustlers (8-3)

• Sunday, January 14 | 5:30 pm in Red Deer

The Kings were able to finish their weekend with back-to-back victories over the top two teams in the North Division. On Saturday night, the Kings managed to come back against the Keyano College Huskies and take the match in five sets (23-25, 25-23, 22-25, 25-22, 15-13). Outside-hitter Colby Nemeth (Bachelor of Commerce) had a team-high 19 kills in the victory and was later named the player of the match.

The following day the Kings only needed four sets to defeat the Lakeland College Rustlers. Nemeth led the team for the second consecutive night with 16 kills but outside-hitter Noah Carlson was awarded the player of the match with a 15-kill performance and hit for an average of .520 in the four-set win.

Currently, the Kings are in first place but the Briercrest College Clippers are just four points back with two games in hand.

Hockey

Queens (13-4) vs Lakeland College Rustlers (11-4)

• Friday, January 12 | 7 pm in Red Deer

• Saturday, January 13 | 7 pm in Lloydminster

The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens split their doubleheader with the Lakeland College Rustlers this past weekend. On Friday night, the Queens came back in the third period to tie it up at two with goals from forward Victoria Longley (Open Studies) and captain Avery Lajeunesse (Bachelor of Education). Two periods of overtime solved nothing but the Queens managed to win it 3-2 in a shootout. Longley was named the player of the game.

On the following night, RDP was held scoreless against the Rustlers with goaltender Izzy Palumbo (Bachelor of Commerce) being named the player of the game as she stopped 19 of 20 shots in the 1-0 loss. The Queens enter their bye week still holding on to first place in the South Division.

Kings (7-7) vs University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings (7-7)

• Friday, January 12 | 7 pm in Camrose

• Saturday, January 13 | 7 pm in Red Deer

The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings exploded for 16 goals in their two wins against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings this past weekend. On Friday night, the game was settled in regulation with forward Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education) scoring a hat trick on his way to being named the player of the game in the Kings 8-4 victory.

But it was a different story on Saturday night, the Kings managed to score eight goals for the second consecutive night but the Vikings also were finding ways to tie the game up and even had a couple of leads in the third period. Nonetheless, the Kings battled back to tie it up in the final 10 minutes and defenceman Ty Ettinger (Bachelor of Education) played hero as he scored the game-winner in overtime to seal the 8-7 victory. He finished with three points in the win and was named the player of the game.

The Kings sit with a 7-7 record and are now tied for fourth place with the Vikings. They are currently 11 points back of the first-place Briercrest College Clippers.
