Indigenous Perspectives Conference returns to RDP

Jan 13, 2024 | 11:53 AM

The Indigenous Perspectives Conference returns to Red Deer Polytechnic in just a couple weeks.

The conference runs Feb. 1-2 and is a collaboration between an organizing committee, the RDP School of Arts and Education, RDP Education Undergrad Society, Students’ Association of RDP, RDP Indigenous Initiatives, Central Alberta Regional Consortium, and The Cultural Activities Trust Fund.

The event is intended to be an enriching one which promotes awareness, understanding and collaboration in support of Indigenous communities and culture.

“The sessions aim to provide participants with an enriching experience that highlights the richness of Indigenous cultures, addresses critical issues, and fosters a platform for sustainable solutions,” organizers say.

“The organizing committee comprises a group of dedicated volunteers who are passionate advocates for Indigenous causes. To increase awareness of Indigenous people and their culture, the committee has extended invitations to school divisions, including Red Deer Catholic School Division and Chinook’s Edge.”

There will be 16 learning opportunities, plus a speech from keynote speaker Chantal Chagnon, a Cree Ojibwe Metis singer, artist and educator who founded an organization called Cree8.

Among the learning opportunities, there will be a blanket exercise session, round dance and talking circle.

The event is mostly free. Non-RDP community members are asked to pay a $15 fee to take part in the meal, which is to be provided by an Indigenous caterer. Registration, which everyone is asked to do, can be done here, and closes Jan. 19.

The Indigenous Perspectives Conference began in 2016.
