Red Deer and other Alberta communities celebrated the first babies on the new year on Monday.

According to Alberta Heath Services (AHS), shortly after 3 a.m. on January 1, Red Deer’s New Year’s baby was born at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

Daughter Bailee is the newest addition for parents Victoria Dorie and Scott Beardy after making her entrance into the world at 3:11 a.m., weighing 7 lb. and 9 oz. Bailee and Victoria are both doing well, AHS says.

“We weren’t sure if she would be a new year’s baby or not when I went into labour,” said Victoria. “There were others in labour around the same time so it was a bit of a surprise to be told we had the first one of the new year here.”

Bailee is the fifth child for Victoria and Scott, welcomed by her older siblings who say they look forward to teaching their little sister as she grows.

The first baby of 2024 was born at an Alberta hospital is Isley Noelle Falk at midnight (0000 hours) at Grey Nuns Community Hospital in Edmonton, weighing exactly 10 lb. Her mother Laura Falk is from Edmonton and says she is thrilled to welcome her new bundle of joy into the world.

“We weren’t expecting January 1 as I was induced on December 29. It’s crazy she hung on for so long. We were hoping for 123123, and we were surprised that she was born right at the stroke of midnight. Either way it’s a special day,” said the new mother.

In Calgary, the New Year’s baby made her appearance at the Foothills Medical Centre at 12:25 a.m.

Parents Chris and Marina Qiro welcomed their new daughter, Marianthi who weighed 6 lb. 5 oz., after a very brief and easy labour, says AHS, adding they are all healthy and happy.

“We were at a New Year’s Eve party when my wife started feeling pain around 9 p.m.,” said Chris. “We went to the hospital, all dressed up, and watched the fireworks at midnight from our room. A few minutes later our daughter was born – it was the best gift ever!”

About a dozen friends and family showed up for a champagne toast outside the hospital Monday morning to celebrate Marianthi’s arrival.

“We wish all of the New Year’s babies and families health, happiness, and plenty of sleep,’ said AHS officials in a release.
