Suspects charged with attempted murder ordered to stand trial

Dec 19, 2023 | 1:58 PM

Three men charged with attempted murder in an alleged assault at Maskwacis last year have been ordered to stand trial.

Connor Diamond Royce Saddleback, 29, of the Montana First Nation, Austin Patrick William Bull, 33, of the Samson Cree Nation, and Justin Blake Simon, 34, also of the Samson Cree Nation, were ordered to stand trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Dec. 14, 2023.

They were ordered to stand trial following the conclusion of a preliminary hearing to determine if their case had enough evidence to go to trial. A trial date, however, has yet to be set.

It was on Feb. 24, 2022, when Maskwacis RCMP were dispatched to assist EMS with a male suffering from injuries sustained from a serious assault.

Police would learn the victim attended a residence known to him, was attacked and held against his will. After a period of time, however, the victim was able to escape to safety.

Mounties say the victim was assessed by EMS on scene and transported to a local area hospital.

Investigators from the Maskwacis General Investigative Section (GIS), along with assistance from Maskwacis General Duty Members, identified three persons believed responsible for the attack.

The trio were charged with attempted murder, forcible confinement, and uttering threats.
