Central Alberta Mounties investigate fatal assault

Dec 19, 2023 | 5:02 PM

A central Alberta man accused in a serious assault this fall has had his charge upgraded to second-degree murder.

On Oct. 9, 2023, Maskwacis RCMP received a report of an assault at a residence on Louis Bull First Nation.

Upon arrival, Mounties say the victim, who has been identified as 66-year-old Gary Gordon Raine, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

RCMP say they initially arrested a suspect at a nearby residence and laid charges for attempted murder. Police say the suspect was taken before a Justice of the Peace and remanded into custody.

However, on Oct. 13, 2023, RCMP say the victim died from injuries received from the assault.

As a result of a joint investigation by Maskwacis RCMP and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit, on Oct. 20, 2023, Mounties say the suspect, 58-year-old Eroll Rabbit, a resident of Maskwacis, had his original charge upgraded to Second Degree Murder.

RCMP say Rabbit remains in custody with his next court date set for Dec. 19, 2023, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Wetaskiwin.
