Rebels take Pats to the limit, win 5-4 in shootout

Dec 16, 2023 | 10:02 PM

At 7-3-0-0 in their last 10 and winners of three straight coming in, the Red Deer Rebels were favourites over the Regina Pats Saturday night, who were 3-7-0-0 in their previous 10.

Red Deer in the meantime had climbed to 6th in the Eastern Conference, while Regina had fallen to 9th.

And it all resulted in a 5-4 shootout win at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

Scoring summary

It didn’t take long for scoring to get going in this one, as Aaron Krestanowich (2nd) got one past Chase Wutzke just 1:44 into the first, putting Regina up 1-0.

Kai Uchacz (20th) tied things up at 10:43, but the Pats regained the lead when Tanner Howe (19th) got a power play marker at 12:49.

It was 2-1 Regina after 20 minutes.

The second belonged to the Rebels, beginning with Frantisek Formanek (7th) tying the game with 4:55 remaining in the period.

Just 1:42 later, Jace Weir (1st) picked a great time to get his first of the season, giving the home team a 3-2 lead headed to the second intermission.

At the 12:40 mark of the third, Kalan Lind (4th) extended the Rebels’ lead to 4-2.

But Howe (20th) got one back 34 seconds later, and Borya Valis (10th) equalized at 16:31.

Through 60 minutes, Red Deer had outshot Regina 33-28, and then peppered Kelton Pyne with seven shots in overtime.

Pyne and the Pats, however, were up to the task, stretching it to a shootout.

In said shootout, Jhett Larson and Dwayne Jean Jr. both scored for the Rebels, while Chase Wutzke only had to make two stops, and the Rebels secured the extra point.
