The Red Deer Rebels are now on a three-game winning streak after a 3-2 victory over the Swift Current Broncos at the Peavey Mart Centrium Thursday night.

The Rebels came into the game, winners of their last two, to finish off their five-game road trip the night before.

Neither team was able to score in the first period with both Rebels goaltender Rhett Stoesser and Broncos netminder Joey Rocha playing solid between the pipes. Red Deer outshot Swift Current 11-10 after 20 minutes.

It was the Rebels, however, who broke the 0-0 goose egg when Kai Uchacz scored his 19th goal of the season at 4:38 of the second period. It came on the powerplay after Swift Current’s Ryan McCleary was called for tripping a little over a minute earlier. Mats Lindgren and Hunter Mayo assisted on the play to make it 1-0.

But the Broncos would get on the board too when Rylan Gould scored his ninth of the season at 8:45. Brady Birnie added the helper to make it 1-1.

The teams would head into the second intermission tied 1-1 and Swift Current outshooting Red Deer 12-10 in the middle frame.

The third period was an exciting one, as the Rebels went up 2-1 after Zane Saab scored his second goal of the season at 5:23, thanks to assists from Hunter Mayo and Samuel Drancak.

The Broncos, however, would keep battling and it eventually pay off when Brady Birnie scored his 12th of the season at 13:10 to tie it up 2-2. Rylan Gould and Zach Turner were credited with the assists.

But the Rebels Hunter Mayo would take advantage of a powerplay opportunity a few minutes later when he scored his third of the season at 16:33, following a kneeing penalty to Swift Current’s Caleb Wyrostok who leads the Broncos in penalty minutes this season. Kai Uchacz and Mats Lindgren set up the go-ahead goal to make it 3-2.

And that’s the way it would stay, with both teams each managing 11 shots on net in the third period and Swift Current outshooting Red Deer 33-32 overall.

Rebels netminder Rhett Stoesser stopped 31 of 33 shots on goal for the evening. The Broncos Joey Rocha, meanwhile, stopped 29 of 32.

On special teams, the Broncos went 0/4 on the power play, while the Rebels went 2/4.

Three Stars:

1. Hunter Mayo, Red Deer – 1G, 2A, +/- 0.

2. Brady Birnie, Swift Current – 1G, 1A, +2.

3. Mats Lindgren, Red Deer – 0G, 2A, +/- 0

The win improves the Rebels record to 16-12-0-3, good for second place in the WHL’s Central Division as they now move past the Swift Current Broncos in the standings.

The Rebels next game is their final one before the holiday break. Saturday, Dec. 16, 2023, 7:00 p.m. MST at the Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer against the 12-16-1-1 Regina Pats.
