Get your dog license renewed at Humane Society

Dec 14, 2023 | 12:47 PM

Red Deerians are being reminded to renew their pet licenses before the flip of the calendar.

New tags, renewals and replacements can be done through the Central Alberta Humane Society (4505 – 77 Street), online using MyCity, in-person at City Hall, or by visiting Alberta Animal Services.

If done through the Humane Society, proceeds from renewal fees go to helping animals in shelter.

According to the City, there were 5,340 dog tags sold in 2023, and 64 fines issued for not obtaining a proper tag. Fines are $250, then $500 and $750 for each consecutive offense.

β€œThe important piece of it all is we encourage people to license their dog because if they do get loose, we want to be able to successfully return the dog to their owner,” says Erin Stuart, Inspections and Licensing Manager, City of Red Deer.

Currently, the City is working on a Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw, which would replace its individual dog, cat and chicken bylaws.

Stuart says once the bylaw gets revisited in 2024, it will include a recommendation from administration that the City implements licensing of cats.

For now, dog license renewals can be ordered through CA Humane here.
