Red Deer’s Nate Danielson makes 2024 World Juniors roster

On Wednesday, Hockey Canada announced its roster for the 2024 World Juniors later this month, and it includes Red Deer’s own Nate Danielson.

Danielson, a centre who is third in scoring and captain for the Brandon Wheat Kings, has 11 goals and 14 assists in 24 games. He is one of eight Western Hockey League players named to the roster.

Danielson doesn’t turn 20 until next season, so could make the World Juniors roster again. He is signed, however, with the Detroit Red Wings, who selected him 9th overall at the 2023 NHL Draft.

The remainder of the roster that will compete to defend Canada’s title in Gothenburg, Sweden was named after a four-day selection camp in Oakville, ON which included a pair of games against U SPORTS all-stars.

“This was a tremendously competitive camp that showed once again the depth of talent that exists across the country,” said Peter Anholt, the under-20 lead for the Program of Excellence management group. “With so many talented players, difficult decisions had to be made, but the management, coaching and scouting staffs believe the team we have assembled will give us the best chance to compete for a gold medal in Sweden. We are excited to travel to Europe and are grateful to the Town of Oakville and the fans for being part of our journey.”

Also going from the WHL are:

Scott Ratzlaff, Seattle – Irma, AB
Denton Mateychuk, Moose Jaw – Dominion City, MB
Tanner Molendyk, Saskatoon – McBride, BC
Conor Geekie, Wenatchee – Strathclair, MB
Fraser Minten, Saskatoon – Vancouver, BC
Matthew Savoie, Wenatchee – St. Albert, AB
Brayden Yager, Moose Jaw – Saskatoon, AB

Also going to Sweden will be Red Deer’s Jason Smart, serving as the team’s security liaison for Hockey Canada. Smart played with the Prince Albert Raiders and Saskatoon Blades from 1986 to 1990, and played multiple seasons in the IHL and ECHL, retiring in 1997.

Canada and Danielson gets their tournament going Dec. 26 versus Finland.
