Red Deer RCMP offer holiday safety tips

Dec 13, 2023 | 9:38 AM

Red Deer RCMP are offering up a holiday list of traffic safety tips, all in the hopes that everyone can have a #DecemberToRemember.

They say keeping safety at the forefront of everything you do will ensure you can enjoy the simple things over the next few weeks.

“I would like to send warm wishes to all Red Deerians for a wonderful and safe holiday season,” says Holly Glassford, Detachment Commander. “It is an honour for our RCMP team to serve this community. Please follow the traffic safety tips and share with family and friends, so all can have a safe and happy holiday.”

The tips are as follows:

Remember to bundle up and buckle up – Always make sure that you are wearing your seatbelt when in a vehicle and that you are dressed for conditions in case your vehicle breaks down or requires assistance.

Remember to get your vehicle winter ready – Install snow tires, make sure that your lights are properly functioning, and completely clear snow and frost from your vehicle before driving.

Remember cruise control is not effective during the winter – Using cruise control when driving on snow or ice can affect the systems ability to maintain a constant vehicle speed, which can lead to a skid or spin. Drive safe and avoid using cruise control during the winter.

Remember to be mindful of road conditions – If the roads are snowy or icy, make sure you drive to conditions and leave a safe breaking distance between you and other vehicles. If it is snowing, especially when dark, make sure that you have your headlights on.

Remember to never drive while impaired – When visiting friends and family over the holidays, always make sure that you either have a safe place to stay or a sober ride home.

Remember to stay with your vehicle – Unless you are within sight of a service station, it’s almost always better to stay with your vehicle if it becomes stuck or breaks down. If you’re vehicle malfunctions on the highway, contact roadside assistance or emergency services.

Remember to have an emergency kit ready – Make sure that you have an emergency kit ready in case your vehicle breaks down. Emergency kits should include: blankets, extra clothing, non-perishable food and water, first aid supplies, booster cables, and a flash light with extra batteries.

This December, remember to keep safety at the forefront of everything you do. Whether it’s travelling to visit family or driving from one festivity to another, there are plenty of simple things you can do to keep yourself, loved ones, and your community safe.
