Jury trial scheduled for pair charged in death of missing Wetaskiwin man

Two men charged in the death of a missing Wetaskiwin man last year are scheduled for a jury trial in 2025.

Cashtin Lee Joseph, 29, and Stanley Victor Keith Howse, 51, both of Wetaskiwin, are scheduled for a jury trial in Wetaskiwin Court of King’s Bench from Feb. 24-March 14, 2025.

The pair were ordered to stand trial in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice on Nov. 9, 2023, following the conclusion of their preliminary hearing to determine if their case had enough evidence to go to trial.

Each have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Brian Michael Dupe, 63, of Wetaskiwin.

It was on October 20, 2022, at 10 pm., when Wetaskiwin RCMP responded to a report of Brian Dupe missing from contact with friends and family, having not been heard from since October 14, 2022.

At the time of Dupe’s disappearance, police say he was without a permanent residence and frequenting social service agencies within and around Wetaskiwin.

An investigation was launched soon afterwards, and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit was brought in to assist.

Through the course of the investigation and with information received from the public, Mounties say human remains believed to be those of Brian Dupe, were located in a rural area west of Alder Flats, late in the evening of Oct. 22, 2022.

An autopsy was completed by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office on Oct. 24, 2022, which police say confirmed the identity of the remains, being that of Dupe.

RCMP announced on Oct. 25, 2022, that one suspect was arrested, with a second suspect arrested the next day, on Oct. 26, 2022.
