The Red Deer Rebels got back in the win column in their second of five road games Wednesday night, following a 5-1 victory over the Warriors at the Moose Jaw Events Centre.

The win improves the Rebels record to 13-11-0-3 on the season so far.

The first period saw the Rebels strike first when Dwayne Jean Jr. beat Warriors netminder Jackson Unger for his second goal of the season at 13:15 to put Red Deer up 1-0. Samuel Drancak and Rebels goaltender Chase Wutzke picked up the assists.

The first period would end with Red Deer outshooting Moose Jaw 15-6.

In the second period, there was no scoring, with Moose Jaw outshooting Red Deer 9-4.

The hometown Warriors would tie it up 1-1 early in the third period, however, when Jagger Firkus finally got one past Rebels netminder Chase Wutzke, just 1:59 into the final frame. Denton Mateychuk was credited with the assist.

But the Rebels responded when Frantisek Formanek scored his sixth of the season at the 10:15 mark, putting the visitors up 2-1. Mats Lindgren and Kai Uchacz, chipped-in the helpers on what would later prove to be the game-winning goal.

Moose Jaw would pull their goalie at 18:25 though in hopes of tying it up, but the Rebels put that dream to bed when Talon Brigley scored his ninth of the season on an empty net to make it 3-1. Kai Uchacz and Ollie Josephson added the apples.

But wait, there was more!

Kai Uchacz proceeded to score another empty net goal for Red Deer, unassisted at 19:23, his 17th of the season to make it 4-1.

But the Rebels still weren’t done, as Evan Smith added one more for good measure at 19:37 to make it a 5-1 final. Matthew Gard assisted on the play.

Red Deer outshot Moose Jaw 10-7 in the third period and 29-22 overall.

On special teams, Red Deer went 0/4 on the power play, while the Warriors went 0/3.

The game’s three stars were as follows:

1. Chase Wutzke, Red Deer. 1GA, 22 shots against, 21 saves and 1A!

2. Frantisek Formanek, Red Deer. 1G, 0A, + 1.

3. Jagger Firkus, Moose Jaw. 1G, 0A, -2.

The Rebels eastern road swing continues at the SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon on Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, 6:00 p.m. MDT against the Blades.
