Rebels’ five-game win streak snapped by visiting Warriors

Dec 1, 2023 | 9:44 PM

In the first of four meetings between the Red Deer Rebels (11-9-0-3) and Moose Jaw Warriors (15-10-0-1), it was the Warriors coming out on top Friday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

For the Rebels, it meant the unfortunate end of their win streak, which reached five-games. That included the first four games of their six-game homestand.

Part of the Rebels’ downfall was giving Moose Jaw eight power plays. That’s despite the fact that to this point of the season, Red Deer has spent the sixth-least amount of time in the penalty box league-wide, and has the sixth-best penalty kill at 82.2 per cent.

Red Deer won’t have to wait long for a chance at revenge, as the teams meet again Dec. 6 in Moose Jaw.

Scoring summary

The goals came early and often to start this one.

Jagger Firkus (24th) opened the scoring with a power play goal at 6:08, then assisted on a second power play marker at 8:38, this time off the stick of Brayden Schuurman (4th), and it was 2-0 Warriors.

But before long, the Rebels found the scoreboard, Jhett Larson (6th) getting one back just 47 seconds after the 2-0 goal.

It only took another 12 seconds for Red Deer to notch another as Talon Brigley (7th) equalized, and it was 2-2 after one period of play.

In the second, tendies Jackson Unger and Rhett Stoesser calmed down a bit, but it was Brayden Yager (16th) regaining the lead for Moose Jaw at 9:27.

It was 3-2 after 40.

Moose Jaw pulled away in the third, Atley Calvert (14th) scoring 9:12 in to restore their early two-goal lead.

Calvert (15th) potted another at 15:01 to make it 5-2, and it was nighty-night for the Rebels and their five-game win streak.
