Rebels win fourth straight in victory over Pats

Nov 25, 2023 | 10:19 PM

The Red Deer Rebels winning streak continued at the Peavey Mart Centrium Saturday night following a 3-2 victory over the Regina Pats.

The win makes four-in-a-row for the Rebels and improves their record to above .500 on the season so far to 10-9-0-3.

It was the Pats, however, who would score first when Brayden Barnett scored his third goal of the season at 7:07 to put the visitors up 1-0.

The Rebels managed to tie it up 1-1 before the period came to an end though when Mats Lindgren scored his third of the season with just 25 seconds left. Kai Uchacz and Hunter Mayo assisted on the power play goal following a high sticking penalty to Regina’s Kolten Bridgeman.

Red Deer outshot Regina 13-8 after 20 minutes of play.

The Rebels then took the lead in the second period when Matthew Gard scored his third goal of the season at 2:04, with Quentin Bourne assisting on the play to make it 2-1.

Red Deer added to their lead just a few minutes later when Carson Birnie scored his third of the season at 5:22 to make it 3-1 Rebels. Ollie Josephson was credited with the assist on what would later turn out to be the game-winning goal.

But Regina’s Sam Oremba narrowed the home team’s lead when he scored his fifth of the season, unassisted at 6:57 to make it 3-2.

Red Deer outshot Regina 13-12 in the second period and 26-20 to that point.

The third period had no scoring, but Rebels goaltender Rhett Stoesser had to make one last great save on the last second of the game to prevent going to overtime.

Red Deer outshot Regina 12-5 in the final frame and 38-25 overall.

On special teams, Red Deer went 1/4 on the power play, while Regina was 0/2.

Three Stars:

1. Mats Lindgren, Red Deer. 1 goal

2. Sam Oremba, Regina. 1 goal

3. Carson Birnie, Red Deer. 1 goal
