Ernest Manning’s second half comeback shocked the province in the Brian Fryer Tier I Championship, winning 28-24 over Raymond.

Just when you thought nothing could be better than the Larry Wilson Tier I final that went into overtime between Salisbury and Foothills, along came the Brian Fryer Tier I Final. The defending champion Raymond Comets started business as usual with a 7 minute drive to paydirt to start the game and led 17-6 at the half.

A funny thing happened on the way to the blowout though as the Ernest Manning Griffins, lead by QB Cohen Wright staged a comeback.  Down 24-6 in the third quarter, Wright – who was Team Alberta’s signal caller in the summer – almost single handedly willed his team to a TD, a two point convert, a successful short kick off, and another TD to draw within 3 points with Comets with 10 minutes left in the game.  From there both teams challenged until the Griffins got the ball with three minutes remaining. A mixture of Wright passes and Damien Cherry runs, took the ball to the Comets 10 yard line with a minute remaining. The next play saw Wright connect with Alex Poitenvien for the go ahead TD and the Griffins held on from that point.

The victory was the first in school history for the football team winning a Provincial Tier I Title.

Salisbury beat Foothills 34-27 in an overtime classic in the Larry Wilson Tier I Game at the Alberta Bowl at Setters Place at Great Chief Park in Red Deer Saturday.

With the score 20-17 at the half for the Sabres, both teams traded punches in the second half with Foothills tying it up with 2 minutes left on the clock on a 27 yard field goal. In overtime, Salisbury’s Jackson Stirling reeled in a 35 yard bomb from Carson McFaul, managing to avoid both the defender and the goal post while catching it almost bent over backwards to secure the win for the Sabres as Foothills was unable to score on their turn in overtime.

The Holy Rosary Raiders from Lloydminster scored their second Tier III Championship in a row with a dominant victory over the Cardston Cougars on a windy day in Red Deer at the Alberta Bowl.

Cardston was in the game recording a similar amount of offense but were derailed by costly turnovers, including two deep in their own territory in the first half which lead to Raider touchdowns and a 14-0 lead at the half.  The Cougars opened the second half with a textbook short kick recovery but failed to take advantage of that and other opportunities in that time period and only broke the shutout with a minute left in the game while the Raiders scored twice to secure the victory.
