New Pet Bylaw now in effect for Penhold

Nov 16, 2023 | 12:39 PM

The Town of Penhold now has a new Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw in place.

During the Oct. 23, 2023 regular council meeting, council gave second and third reading to Bylaw 818/2023 Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw. Town officials say the Bylaw was passed and is in effect immediately.

Bylaw 818/2023 highlights pet owners need to know

  • This bylaw allows for a combined household total of up six (6) animals, with no more than four (4) hens allowed per household.
  • Residents who register their pets for the following year in October, November or December will pay a reduced fee.
  • Based on repeat violations issued for the same infractions, the classification of animals as “Nuisance” or “Restricted” can now be assigned in cases with repeat non-compliance. Those persons who are compliant with the bylaw are required to pay less than those who are in breach of the bylaw.
  • The new Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw combines the previous Dog Bylaw, Cat Bylaw and Urban Hen regulations from the Community Standards Bylaw. To bring the three existing “animal” bylaws under one umbrella, Bylaw 818/2023 Responsible Pet Ownership Bylaw was approved, repealing Bylaws 713/14 Dog Bylaw, 714/14 Cat Bylaw, and Bylaw 807/2022 Community Standards Amendment Bylaw to Include Urban Chickens.
