Red Deer crews extinguish fire at Clearview restaurant, daycare evacuated

Nov 9, 2023 | 2:03 PM

Red Deer Emergency Services knocked down a fire in a commercial area of Clearview late Thursday morning.

Matt White, Assistant Deputy Chief, says crews responded at about 11:20 a.m. to a structure fire inside a restaurant called China House, located at Unit 160 – 8 Conway Street, in Clearview Market Square.

“Crews arrived on scene to see black smoke pushing from the roof of the building. They made entry into the unit, found a small fire in the kitchen of the restaurant and were able to put it out quickly with dry chem extinguishers,” says White. “Then they opened up the ceiling to make sure there was no extension of the fire, and there wasn’t.”

White says the smoke was coming out from the roof through the built-in vent; otherwise, the fire was contained to the kitchen.

The restaurant wasn’t open at the time, so crews had to gain access to the space by smashing the glass on the front entrance. The exact cause and extent of the damage is yet to be determined.

A daycare full of children on the building’s upper level was evacuated, as were some adjacent businesses.

No one, including the one restaurant worker who exited through the back of the building, plus fire crews, was hurt.

Four engines, an ambulance, a ladder truck and a platoon chief responded.
