rising from the ashes

Upcoming Red Deer Symphony Orchestra concert offers thrill of a rebirth

Nov 8, 2023 | 10:55 AM

The Red Deer Symphony Orchestra and its audience will experience the thrill of a rebirth this Nov. 18 with its concert entitled Dancing Phoenix.

Dancing Phoenix, RDSO’s second show of the year, takes on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s spectacular string serenade Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, along with Edvard Grieg’s Holberg Suite.

Claude Lapalme, RDSO Music Director, commissioned this concert in 2021 for the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, before that group debuted it in 2022.

Lapalme says he originally focused on the phoenix as a metaphor for exiting the pandemic.

“The phoenix is in a slumber and it is very hopeful. To a degree, it does not carry the same type of despair we were experiencing during COVID. We were all hopeful for new beginnings though, and a restart,” he says.

“The phoenix eventually rises from its ashes, then starts to dance and fly. Performing arts were hit very hard by COVID, live performances in particular. There was no getting together. But all of a sudden, we and many other things were experiencing that rebirth.”

Lapalme ensures the performance, with its serenity, will make everyone’s spirit soar.

RDSO’s own Nikki McCaslin will be featured in the concert performing Lars-Erik Larsson’s virtuosic Trombone Concertino.

Showtime on Nov. 18 from the Red Deer Polytechnic Arts Centre is from 7:30-10 p.m. Tickets range from $43-65.
