Rockets fail to launch in Rebels 3-1 win

Nov 4, 2023 | 10:57 PM

The Red Deer Rebels won by a score of 3-1 against the Kelowna Rockets Saturday night, in what was the teams’ first meeting in the Okanagan since Feb. 15, 2020.

The last time they met was in Red Deer on Feb. 25 of this year, when the Rebels won 5-1.

Both teams have struggled on the young season though, Red Deer coming in 5-7-0-2 after losing Friday in Kamloops, while Kelowna was 7-7-1-0, 5-5 in their last 10.

Scoring summary

The first period started feisty, with Matteo Fabrizi and Max Graham dropping the gloves — Red Deer’s Fabrizi was given an extra minor but Kelowna was unable to capitalize on the ensuing power play.

Then, after getting a shootout goal Friday, Frantisek Formanek (3rd) scored 5:20 into the first period, giving Red Deer an early lead.

At 12:41, however, Caden Price (2nd) tied the game at one.

To the second, where Red Deer had multiple power play opportunities.

They finally capitalized with the man advantage at 17:06 when Kai Uchacz (10th) scored yet again for the 2-1 lead.

In the third, Carson Latimer (8th) put another puck past the goaltender on the power play, just 1:24 in.

Kelowna had its special teams chances, but could not take advantage, and it ended 3-1 Red Deer.

The Rebels are now 1-1-0-1 on their seven-game road trip.
