Record year for nurse registration in Alberta says regulator

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta says registrations for the 2023-24 practice year have hit record levels.

The organization says in a news release that total registration reached 40,249, an increase of 10.6 per cent or a total of 3896 nurses compared to 2022-23.

The total breaks down to 39,538 registered nurses and 807 nurse practitioners.

The record comes even though 2146 nurses moved to a non-practicing register, which is usually related to retirement. Another 872 let their permits lapse.

The college says in that same release that the numbers show Alberta is a destination of choice for people who work in healthcare, adding the increase in registrations will benefit the health system in both rural and urban areas.

“The record-breaking permit renewal numbers for the 2023-2024 practice year demonstrate the dedication of our registrants and our unwavering commitment to ensuring the health care system in this province remains robust and responsive,” says college Registrar and CEO Joy Peacock in that same release.

The organization goes on to say that new graduates and transfers from other parts of Canada and other parts of the world continue to join, as do nurses returning to work after taking a leave.
