Rebels fall to Blazers in 9-round shootout

Nov 3, 2023 | 11:10 PM

1,358 days — that’s how long it had been since the 5-7-0-1 Red Deer Rebels had paid a visit to the 3-10-2-0 Kamloops Blazers, until Friday night at the Sandman Centre.

The date was Feb. 14, 2020, and the Blazers won 5-3 that night.

Kamloops also won when these teams last met, which was in Red Deer on Feb. 17 of this year, the final score that night being 7-4.

And on this evening, with each team fifth in their respective divisions, the game ended with the Blazers on top 4-3 via the shootout.

Scoring summary

Harrison Brunicke (2nd) drew first blood for the home team, scoring at 11:53 for the 1-0 lead.

Just 1:31 later, Kai Uchacz (8th) evened things up, and it was 1-1 after 20 minutes.

In the second, Uchacz (9th) was at it again, getting his second of the night, this time shorthanded, at 5:18 for the 2-1 Rebels lead.

But before long, at 10:14, Ashton Ferster (3rd) scored the game-tying goal on the power play, with Carson Latimer serving a major for checking from behind.

Late in the second, at 17:01, Samuel Drancak (3rd) regained the lead for Red Deer.

To the third, and at the 12:03 mark, Dylan Sydor (11th) once again equalized for Kamloops, and regulation time ended 3-3.

In overtime, there was nothing doing, however come the shootout, the Blazers would send their fans home happy.

The shootout went a lengthy nine rounds — Jhett Larson and Frantisek Formanek scored for the Rebels, but it was Max Sullivan getting the eventual winner for Kamloops before Quentin Bourne couldn’t keep the Rebels alive.
