Alberta projected to spend $41B on healthcare in 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A new report highlights how much money governments across the country are projected to spend on healthcare this year.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) said, across the country, provinces and territories are forecast to spend over $343 billion on healthcare in 2023, or an average of $8,740 per person.

This marks an increase in national health spending of approximately $737 million, or 27.3 per cent, compared to 2019.

In Alberta, the CIHI estimates that more than $41.8 billion will be spent in the health sector, or $9,014 per capita.

Health spending in Alberta is forecast to have grown by $7.2 billion, or 20.8 per cent, over the last four years.

The three most expensive areas of healthcare in Alberta for 2023 are hospitals ($10.7 billion), physicians ($6.4 billion), and drugs ($5.4 billion).

Per person, Ontario is projected to spend the least amount of money on healthcare at $8,413. Nunavut, on the other hand, thanks to its lower population, will have spent $23,652 per person.
