‘Walk with the Mayors’ event kicks-off Falls Prevention Month in Olds this November

The Central Alberta Falls Prevention Coalition (CAFPC) will be hosting their annual “Walk with the Mayors” event this November.

The event is the central Alberta launch of the provincial Falls Prevention Month campaign, occurring annually in November.

On November 1 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., mayors, older adults, associating organizations, members of the public and local children will gather to walk around the indoor track at the Ralph Klein Centre at Olds College (4500 50 St.) to support the cause.

In past years, numerous mayors from across the region have participated in the event, including Red Deer, Penhold, Innisfail, Sylvan Lake, Red Deer Country, Delburne, Blackfalds, Mountain View County, Olds, Sundre and Bowden. This event has also been hosted in Penhold, Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, and Innisfail.

“Every year, many older adults fall. After a fall, many of these individuals are unable to continue living the way they want. They may lose their independence or live in fear of falling again. Falls are not a natural part of getting older, and they can be prevented,” said CAFPC officials.

In Alberta, the CAFPC says that 20 – 30 per cent of older adults will fall at least once a year, with seniors’ falls costing $290 million in hospital admissions and emergency department visits. In 2019, they state there were almost 10,000 fall-related hospital admissions.

“With our aging population, it is very important to share the message that falls can be prevented,” said the Coalition in a release.

For those that cannot join the event in Olds, the Coalition says communities can host their own walks, proclaiming November as Falls Prevention Month.

The CAFPC is a local group of people, both professional and members of the public, invested in the health and wellbeing of older adults, and specifically passionate about falls prevention. They aim to focus on the many factors that affect falls, through education, awareness, promotions, workshops, and campaigns.
