Two people dead, third in hospital after crash south of Red Deer

9:15 p.m. – Oct. 20: 

RCMP now say two people have died due to a crash that happened Friday morning south of Red Deer.

At about 9:30 a.m., RCMP received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the northbound side of the QEII south of McKenzie Road.

Despite efforts from emergency crews, two people identified as a 93-year-old male from Sundre, and a 78-year-old male from Rocky Mountain House died on scene.

A third occupant, that being a 70-year-old female from Sundre who was driving one of the vehicles, was taken to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.

“RCMP remained on scene for several hours while the collision analyst conducted their investigation,” RCMP say. “Though still early in the investigation, preliminary findings suggests that one of the vehicles was pulled over on the side of the road and, when trying to reintegrate the travelling lane, collided with a vehicle heading in the same direction.”

The investigation is ongoing.

2:41 p.m. – Oct. 20: RCMP have cleared the scene on the QE II Highway and normal traffic flow has resumed.

A release with additional details is anticipated

10:35 a.m.- Oct. 20: Blackfalds RCMP are currently on scene responding to a serious motor vehicle collision on the QEII Highway just south of McKenzie road, south of Red Deer.

RCMP advise that northbound traffic on the QEII is being diverted while emergency crews respond and police investigate.

RCMP anticipate remaining on scene for several hours.
