Weekly Top-10 high school football rankings

Oct 16, 2023 | 3:10 PM

Here are the Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in Alberta and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2023 season.

These rankings come out every Sunday until November 6. At that time those will be the last rankings and teams will take this rank into Provincials

The teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Some re-sorting of Tier’s will take place after the final population numbers are recorded at the end of September. Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

Playoff Lives on the Line!

Tier I

#9 Salisbury Sabres at #6 Paul Kane Blues

7:30 p.m., Friday, October 20, Riel Athletic Park (St. Albert)

Based on the results from the wild and wacky world that was last week at the Tier I level the Salisbury Sabres are now back in the hunt for a Metro Edmonton Division I Playoff berth. Left for dead after two straight losses, including one to Tier II sized Austin O’Brien, they rose from the ashes and beat their crosstown rivals, the #10 Bev Facey Falcons, handily last Friday. This now puts the Sabres in a high stakes game of Musical Chairs with Bev Facey, Austin O’Brien and their host for this weekends game, Paul Kane, for the last three spots in the Metro Div. I Playoffs that will start the following week. Not sure of the math on what happens when who beat who, but both of these teams know that winning this game is the quickest and most direct way to securing that playoff spot. Should be fun in St. Albert this Friday.

BEST OF THE REST

TIER I

#4 St. Francis Browns at #3 Ernest Manning Griffins

7:30 p.m., Thursday, October 19, Hellard Field at Shouldice Park (Calgary)

This game had the potential to be a battle of the undefeated teams in Calgary Division I, but Notre Dames victory over the Browns on Oct. 6 put a wrench in that. It just goes to show how close the competition in the top division in Calgary. Can the Griffins stay undefeated or will it be the Browns night?

TIER II

Sturgeon Spirits at Bellerose Bulldogs

5:00 p.m., Friday, October 20, Riel Athletic Park (St. Albert)

It’s not for any Provincial ranking or qualification as both of these programs play in Division II in the Metro Edmonton Association, but it’s for bragging rights at that level in the Greater St. Albert area. Once upon a time you would see great clashes with full stands in St. Albert when Bellerose, St. Albert and/or Paul Kane would play each other in the regular season. Now with all three teams spread over three divisions in the Metro that doesn’t happen anymore. Enter the Sturgeon Spirits from nearby Sturgeon County who are led by former Bulldog head coach Chad Hill. Once combined with Bellerose to form a Tier I power they now sport their own team and a very competitive one at that. Both teams enter this game with winning records and this game will have definite playoff implications for Metro Edmonton Division II and bring back the passion of a rivalry game to St. Albert.

6-A-SIDE

#2 J.C. Charyk Hawks at #1 Millwoods Christian Royals

1:00 p.m., Thursday, October 19, Millwoods Christian H.S. (Edmonton)

Another long trip for the Hawks but this time for a rematch of the last two Alberta Bowl 6-a-Side Championship Games. A battle of the undefeated will feature lots of scoring for sure in an early game on Thursday.
