Rebels dominate Oil Kings in thrilling 5-2 win

Oct 15, 2023 | 8:50 PM

The Red Deer Rebels had one of their best games yet this season, beating the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-2 at Rogers Place on Sunday.

The Rebels had fans holding their breath in the first period when Matteo Fabrizi received a high sticking penalty within the first two minutes. But even short handed, Red Deer’s Carson Latimer scored his fourth goal of the season at 3:05 on Edmonton’s goaltender Kolby Hay. With Dwayne Jean Jr. getting the apple, the Rebels were up 1-0.

The home team evened the scoreboard 1-1 at 8:46 when Rilen Kovacevic scored on Rebels netminder Chase Wutzke.

With Edmonton’s Rhett Melnyk sent to the box for roughing at the halfway point, Red Deer took advantage of the power play with Latimer scoring just 13 seconds later, for the second time of the night. His fifth goal of the season was assisted by Hunter Mayo and Kalan Lind, putting the team in a 2-1 lead.

After 20 minutes, the Oil Kings were outshooting the Rebels 14-7.

With no goals in the second period, Red Deer had more shots on goal this time compared to Edmonton (13-6). However, the Oil Kings’ Melnyk received a tripping penalty in the final minute, spilling into the third period.

With Edmonton starting the period one man down in the final frame, the Rebels once again took advantage of the power play opportunity, with Carson Birnie scoring his first goal of the season just after the first minute. With Lind and Quentin Bourne getting the helper, the team pushed their lead 3-1.

The Oil Kings cut their deficit when Aidan Litke scored at 10:57, now 3-2 behind the Rebels.

But the Rebels decimated the home team for the remainder of the game, with Frantisek Formanek scoring his second goal of the season at 17:24. Assisted by Kai Uchacz and Jhett Larson, the visitors were leading 4-2.

And with 30 seconds left in regulation, Red Deer’s Uchacz scored his third goal this season on Edmonton’s empty net, bringing the team to a 5-2 win.

Edmonton slightly outshot Red Deer in the third period (15-14).

The Rebels are rising up in their Central Division rankings with a 3-3-0-1 record, while the Oil Kings are 3-6-0-1.
