Welcoming Red Deer proclamation to kick off series of events to help newcomers

Red Deer Local Immigration Partnership (RDLIP) and the Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre (CACPC) are set to host a series of events under the banner of Welcoming Red Deer.

The events are intended to show Red Deer can be a welcoming place, and one which celebrates the people, places and values which make people feel welcome.

It is part of a larger global campaign called Welcoming Week, which typically takes place in September.

“It is exciting to invite all the residents of Red Deer to open their hearts and doors to newcomers,” says Gordana Jovanovic, communication and outreach coordinator, RDLIP. “Learning about new cultures can make a world of a difference, it encourages newcomers to stay in our community and enriches everyone socially, culturally and economically.”

Events kick off Thursday, Oct. 12 with a proclamation from Mayor Ken Johnston. The event runs from 10-11 a.m. at the Snell Auditorium, which is downstairs at the downtown Red Deer Public Library.

Other events are scheduled, such as a blanket exercise on Nov. 8, as well as anti-racism training, and a community resource fair for newcomers and long-time residents to learn about various things such as protecting one’s self from frauds and scams.

“Welcoming newcomers helps create strong connections, and a vibrant community,” says TerryLee Ropchan, executive director, CACPC. “The CACPC is proud to partner on this initiative and looks forward to connecting with those who are new to the city to share crime prevention resources, education, and volunteer opportunities.”
