Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Hockey is back at Red Deer Polytechnic with Queens Hockey dropping the puck on their season this weekend.

They will be in Olds to take on the Broncos on Friday night but the Queens will have their home opener on Saturday night at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre as they welcome the Lakeland College Rustlers. The puck will drop at 7 pm for both games this weekend.

The excitement continues as the Kings and Queens Soccer teams will have two home games each. They will start things off on Saturday afternoon with a match against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. Note the start time as they will start at 2 pm and 4 pm.

The Kings and Queens will finish their weekend with a big match as they welcome the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. The Kodiaks women’s team is sitting first in the South Division as they are undefeated and are coming off a huge 2-0 win against the SAIT Trojans this past Saturday.

Queens (0-0-0) vs Olds College Broncos (0-0-0)

• • Friday, October 6 | 7 pm in Olds

Queens (0-0-0) vs Lakeland College Rustlers (0-0-0)

• • Saturday, October 7 | 7 pm in Red Deer

After a few pre-season games over the last month, the Queens will finally kick off their championship defense this weekend with two games on the schedule.

They will first head off to Olds on Friday night to take on the Broncos. Last year, the Queens won the five-game regular season series 3-2. But those two games they lost happened to take place in Olds which is where they will be on Friday night. The Queens did outscore the Broncos 17-8 and held them scoreless in their opening game against one another last season.

Head Coach Kelly Coulter knows it will be a battle with the Central Alberta school as they always compete hard in every game they play.

On the following day, the Queens will hold their home opener as they welcome the Lakeland College Rustlers, who are coming off their first season competing in the ACAC. The Rustlers finished with a record of 10-10 and 22 points in the regular season which put them in the playoffs. But they were swept by the Queens in the three-game series, who ultimately went on to sweep the NAIT Ooks in the championship final to win their second consecutive ACAC title. The puck will drop for the game against the Rustlers on Saturday night at 7 pm.

Tickets can be purchased online or at the door on game day.

Soccer

Queens (4-3-0) vs Lethbridge College Kodiaks (6-0)

• • Sunday, October 8 | 12 pm in Red Deer

The Queens will have a doubleheader this weekend at home as they first welcome the Medicine Hat College Rattlers on Saturday afternoon with a big match against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Sunday at noon.

On the first weekend of the season, the Queens defeated the Rattlers 2-1 with goals from two rookies Isabel Anthony (Open Studies) and Anessa Harrod (Open Studies). The goal from Harrod was scored in the 83rd minute and ultimately, won the match for her team.

The Rattlers, currently sit in fourth place right behind the Queens with a 3-4 record. This past weekend Medicine Hat was defeated by the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings but followed that up with a huge 8-0 victory over the Ambrose University Lions.

The Queens will be in tough on the following day as they will welcome the Kodiaks, who are coming off a huge victory over the SAIT Trojans this past weekend and sit undefeated at the top of the South Division.

The Polytechnic visited Lethbridge for their first game of the season and saw the Queens almost complete the comeback after giving up two goals, but they fell just short of it as they were defeated 2-1 with the goal coming from Anthony.

The match against the Rattlers will kick off at 2 pm on Saturday with the game against the Kodiaks starting at noon on Sunday.

Kings (1-3-1) vs Medicine Hat College Rattlers (1-3-2)

• • Saturday, October 7 | 4 pm in Red Deer

Kings (1-3-1) vs Lethbridge College Kodiaks (4-1-0)

• • Sunday, October 8 | 2 pm in Red Deer

For the first time since the opening weekend of soccer action, the Kings will have a doubleheader to prepare for as they welcome the Medicine Hat College Rattlers and the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

They will first take on the Rattlers on Saturday afternoon at 4 pm. The last time these two teams met the Kings pulled away with a 2-2 tie with goals from defender Adan Sanchez (Bachelor of Education) and midfielder Ajdin Sarcevic (Business Administration). Sanchez’s header opened the scoring but after two consecutive goals from the Rattlers, the Polytechnic found themselves down until Sarcevic took advantage of a penalty kick to tie it up at two. But the Kings will not be settling for anything but a win as they really are fighting for the final playoff spot as they sit just with four points.

And it will not get any easier as they welcome the Lethbridge College Kodiaks who are sitting nicely in second place with 12 points after being defeated by the SAIT Trojans this past weekend.

The Kodiaks hosted the Kings on the second day of ACAC Men’s Soccer action this season. It was looking like it was going to be a Lethbridge College blowout as they scored three unanswered goals in the first 47 minutes of the match. But Sarcevic and striker Jaeden Swartz (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) answered for the Polytechnic but that was the closest they would get as they fell 3-2.

The match against the Kodiaks on Sunday will kick off following the conclusion of the Queens match.
