Oct 4, 2023 | 2:19 PM

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Athletics says it was a pretty successful weekend for the Kings and Queens Cross-Country teams this past weekend.

They say the athletes placed very well in the third Grand Prix of the season in Lethbridge.

The Kings and Queens Soccer teams both were defeated by their central Alberta rivals, the Olds College Broncos. But the Queens ended their week on a winning note as they defeated the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Sunday afternoon.

The RDP Kings and Queens continued their dominance in the ACAC Running Room Grand Prix events.

The Queens were able to run away with a first-place finish in the team event as they had a 20-point difference between them and the Medicine Hat Rattlers who finished in second place. The women were once again led by Justine Larson (Bachelor of Education) who crossed the finish line in fourth place with a time of 26:19. The Queens would occupy sixth through ninth with Myah Cota (Open Studies), Georgia Sawchuk (Bachelor of Science in Psychology), Loami Rautenbach and Emily Barritt (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) crossing the finish line one after another with times ranging from 26:57 to 27:22.

Ben House (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) was once again the first Kings runner to cross the finish line in fifth overall with a time of 28:16 in the 8km event. House just beat out his teammate Jordan Coen (Open Studies) by five seconds as Coen came in sixth place.

Head Coach Douglas Spicer said Coen’s sixth-place finish put the top runners on notice that he’s ready to challenge for a top-five position at the ACAC Championships which will be held on the same course on October 28.

The next Kings student-athlete to complete the race was Dan Szucs (Bachelor of Business Administration) who finished in eighth place overall with a time of 29:02.

With these finishes in the top 10, the Kings walked away with 28 points and second place while the SAIT Trojans, who had a full team for the first time this season, came in first with 16.

The next Grand Prix will be held in Camrose on October 14th with the hosts being the University of Alberta-Augustana Viking.

It was a tough start to this past weekend for the Queens Soccer program as they fell to the Olds College Broncos 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in what was a hard-fought Battle of central Alberta.

For most of the match, the Queens and Broncos were deadlocked at zero but after a costly miscommunication mistake at the back, Olds College went up 1-0 with the insurance goal being added a couple minutes later. Midfielder Sofia Quinteros (Practical Nursing Diploma) was named the player of the match for her gritty work in the middle of the pitch.

But all ended well at the end of the weekend with the Queens defeating the Vikings 1-0 with an 88th-minute goal by striker Grace Smith (Bachelor of Business Administration). This win brought the Queens to a 4-3 record which puts them third in the division, six points out of second and three points ahead of fourth place. Centre-back Kayla Yeo (Open Studies) was named the player of the match in Camrose for her outstanding efforts keeping her defensive line intact.

Kings (1-3-1) vs Olds College Broncos (2-3-1)

  • Saturday, September 30 at 2 p.m. in Red Deer

In a very tight contest, the Kings fell to the Olds College Broncos in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The Broncos would open the scoring in the final minute of the first half after a back-and-forth match that saw goal chances on each side of the pitch. Striker Jaeden Swartz (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences), who sat for the first 45 minutes after dealing with an ankle injury last week, came on at the half and it paid for the Kings as they found the equalizer in the 64th minute. But the Broncos would strike again which ultimately was the game-winner as they capitalized on a set-piece off the corner 15 minutes later after the Polytechnic tied it up at one.

Centre-back Njegos Bajovic (Open Studies) was named the player of the match.

The Kings will be back in action this Saturday as they welcome the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. Note the start time as the match will kick off at 4 p.m.
