This week in Red Deer Polytechnic Athletics

Sep 27, 2023 | 4:29 PM

It will be the last very quiet weekend in Red Deer Polytechnic as the sports across the campus will be picking up and making it busier in the coming weeks. But this weekend just soccer and cross-country will be in action.

Starting things off will be soccer on Saturday with the Kings and Queens hosting the Olds College Broncos. The men will follow this up with a bye but the women will head off on the road to take on the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Sunday.

After a weekend off, the Kings and Queens Cross-Country teams will be back on the trails with the third Running Room Grand Prix being held in Lethbridge.

Please refer below for more details regarding each match and race.

Soccer

Queens (3-2-0) vs Olds College Broncos (1-4)

• • Saturday, September 30 | 12 pm in Red Deer

Queens (3-2-0) vs University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings

• • Sunday, October 1 | 12 pm in Camrose

Coming off a dominant performance led by defender Quinn Daku (Open Studies), the Queens will be looking to make it two in a row as they welcome the Olds College Broncos on Saturday afternoon.

The Broncos are coming off their first win of the season yesterday as they defeated the Ambrose University Lions 6-0 on the road. Olds College currently sits in fifth place with a 1-4 record.

The last time these two teams met was in the final regular season match last year when the Queens shutout the Broncos 5-0 in what was a very chilly day in October. The Polytechnic got goals from graduate, now assistant coach Alisha Coules, rookie of the year sensation Sein Furuyama (Open Studies, co-captain Kayla Yeo and former student-athlete Corbynn Fujimoto.

The Queens will follow this up with their final head-to-head match against the Vikings on Sunday. These two teams faced off two weeks ago in the Polytechnic’s home opener. The Queens offense was on fire with five consecutive goals from five different goal scorers to come away with a shutout victory over the Camrose-based team.

This match will kick-off at 12 pm but will not be live streamed.

Kings (1-2-1) vs Olds College Broncos

• • Saturday, September 30 | 2 pm in Red Deer

For the second consecutive week, the Kings will just have one match to worry about as they welcome the Olds College Broncos which is a team the Kings haven’t seen since they defeated the Broncos back in late October to move into the quarterfinals of the 2022 ACAC Championships hosted by Lethbridge College.

The Kings would open the scoring thanks to former midfielder Jhojanner Amaris but the Broncos tied it up in the late stages of the first half. Unfortunately for them, the Kings would score two goals thanks to midfielder Ajdin Sarcevic (Business Administration) and striker Grant Johnson (Legal Assistant) to come with a 3-1 victory. This win gave them the chance to compete at the championship held in Raymond, AB but would fall the Keyano College Huskies in the quarterfinals to end their season.

One year later, the Kings are coming off their first victory of the season this past weekend thanks to a two-goal performance by Johnson (Legal Assistant) which is going very helpful in the coming weeks as they look to build on this win and compete for a playoff spot in the next coming weeks.

The match against the Broncos on Saturday will kick-off around 2 pm.

Kings and Queens Cross-Country

• • Saturday, September 30 hosted by Lethbridge College

After the weekend off, the Kings and Queens will be hitting the trails once again with the third Running Room Grand Prix of the season being held in Lethbridge. This trail will also feature the best the ACAC has to offer come October 28 as Lethbridge College will be hosting both the men’s and women’s championships.

The Kings and Queens enter this weekend’s race in first place on the season as both teams have claimed the top spot at the first two Grand Prix of the year.

Ben House (Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences) will lead the Kings into this weekend after coming off his best performance of the year where he finished in third place with a time of 27:59 in the 8km race. As for the Queens top finisher, Justine Larson (Bachelor of Education), she is coming off a time of 26:55 which was good enough for sixth place.

They will look to continue their dominance in the 6 and 8km races on National Truth and Reconciliation Day with the women starting things off at noon at the Nicholas Sheran Park in Lethbridge.
