Preliminary hearing scheduled for man charged in fatal stabbing

A man charged in a fatal stabbing last spring should find out next year if his case has enough evidence to go to trial.

Ian Lawrence Saddleback, 41, is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in Wetaskiwin Court of Justice from May 13-14, 2024.

It was on June 3, 2023, just after 10 p.m., when Maskwacis RCMP received a report of a stabbing that had occurred at a residence on Samson Cree Nation.

Upon arrival, RCMP located a victim with serious injuries. Police say they attempted to administer first aid to the victim and called EMS. Sadly, upon EMS arrival, Mounties say the victim who was identified as a 34-year-old male resident of Maskwacis, was deceased. Officers quickly located and arrested a suspect.

The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation with the assistance of Maskwacis RCMP.
