Sep 18, 2023 | 1:16 PM

Here are the Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in Alberta and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2023 season.

These rankings will come out every Sunday until November 6. At that time those will be the last rankings and teams will take this rank into Provincials

The teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Some re-sorting of Tier’s will take place after the final officials population numbers are recorded at the end of September. Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

GAME OF THE WEEK:

The Game of Many Names!

Tier I

#5 Salisbury Sabres at #2 Harry Ainlay Titans

5:00 p.m., Friday, September 22, Foote Field (Edmonton)

Regular season games between these two premier programs have been classics both pre- and post-pandemic to the point where they’ve gotten nicknames. In 2018 both teams battled each other as well as the elements in the “Battle in the Blizzard” won by the Titans. In 2019 the field goal attempt that wasn’t’ due to an inadvertent whistle by an official left us with the “Faux Field Goal Game” which ended in an 11-11 tie. Getting back to business after the pandemic in 2021 saw the best of the bunch in the “(Almost) Comeback Classic” where the Titans took off to a 28-0 lead at the half only to hang on for a 35-30 victory. Last year’s game doesn’t get a “name” but it was the only close game Harry Ainlay experienced before dropping the ASAA Provincial Title game to Raymond at the Alberta Bowl, with the Titan’s winning 26-17.

This year’s game is a little earlier in the year than we’re used to but it will still be the must-see game of the year in Division I. The Sabres are in reloading mode while the Titans are shooting once again for another ASAA Provincial Championship. Regardless, red vs. blue has provided thrills going back to the 1980’s so if you only go to one game in the Edmonton area this year – this is the one.

BEST OF THE REST

TIER I

#4 All Saints Legends vs. #9 Notre Dame Pride

5:00 p.m., Friday, September 22, Hellard Field at Shouldice Park (Calgary)

So how good are the Legends? Still relative newbies to Calgary Division I, they rode their 2022 season to the ASAA Larry Wilson Tier I Title game appearance last year and are 3-0 so far in 2023. A test against the Pride will tell a lot.

L.C.I. Rams at #1 Raymond Comets

7:00 p.m., Friday, September 22, Comet Stadium (Raymond)

Normally the de facto Game of the Week when it happens, but the Rams are winless so far in 2023 having played the toughest schedule of any Tier I team in Alberta. Still, it is L.C.I. vs. Raymond and the passion and rivalry is worth the admission.

TIER II

#4 Chinook Coyotes at #1 Holy Trinity Academy Knights

6:00 p.m., Friday, September 22, Knights Field (Okotoks)

This one is curious in that a lot is expected of Chinook this year and so far, so good at 2-0. Now for the real test as they travel to Okotoks to take on the #1 ranked Knights.
