Rebels close out pre-season with 4-3 overtime loss in Lethbridge

The Red Deer Rebels wrapped up their exhibition season at the Enmax Centre in Lethbridge Saturday night with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Hurricanes.

As a result, the Rebels finished the pre-season with a record of 2-2.

The first period saw the Rebels strike first when Evan Smith scored his first of the pre-season at 1:52, beating Lethbridge netminder Koen Cleaver to make it 1-0 for the visitors. Kai Uchacz assisted on the play.

The Hurricanes would tie it up later in the period though when Kooper Gizowski would earn his second goal of the pre-season, beating Rebels netminder Kyle Kelsey at 17:52 to make it 1-1. Anton Astashevich and Miguel Marques were credited with the helpers.

The game remained tied 1-1 after 20 minutes with Lethbridge outshooting Red Deer 12-8.

The Hurricanes would take the lead in the second period though soon after Red Deer’s Levi Green was assessed a five-minute major for charging and a 10-minute game misconduct. Trae Wilke would light the lamp at 5:32 on the power play for his first of the pre-season, with assists coming from Elias Knoester and Blake Swetlikoff to make it 2-1 Lethbridge.

But Red Deer would tie it back up when Elias Carmichael scored his first of the pre-season, unassisted at 9:53 to make it 2-2.

Less than two minutes later, however, the Hurricanes regained the lead 3-2 after Miguel Marques scored his third of the pre-season at 11:23, with Anton Astashevich and Kooper Gizowski assisting on the play.

The score remained 3-2 after 40 minutes with Red Deer outshooting Lethbridge 13-8 in the middle frame, for a two-period total of 21-20 in favour of the Rebels.

Zane Saab would then tie it back up for Red Deer at 15:48 of the third period. It was his first goal of the pre-season with Nicholas Andrusiak and Dwayne Jean Jr., getting the assists, making the score 3-3.

That would eventually lead to overtime where the Hurricanes Miguel Marques would score his second of the game and fourth of the pre-season to make it a 4-3 overtime final. Tristen Doyle and Kooper Gizowski chipped in the helpers for the game-winning goal.

Red Deer outshot Lethbridge 8-4 in the third period, with the Hurricanes outshooting the Rebels 1-0 in extra time for a total of 29-25 in favour of Red Deer.

Lethbridge would earn all three game stars as well, with Anton Astashevich, who picked up two assists on the night, getting the game’s third star, while teammate Kooper Gizowski, who scored once and added two assists for three points, was named the game’s second star. First star honours went to Miguel Marques who also managed three points with two goals and one assist.

The Rebels now look towards the regular season when they kick-off the new campaign with a home game against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
