Red Deer Polytechnic has announced its Athletes of the Week:

1. Isabel Anthony

Hometown: Sherwood Park, AB

Open Studies (1st year)

It was an incredible start to Isabel Anthony’s Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) as she scored twice in as many games to help her team to a 1-1 record. Her first goal came against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Saturday afternoon after a goalkeeping mistake which Anthony took advantage of to cut Lethbridge’s lead in half. The Queens would fall 2-1 to the Kodiaks. The following day it did not take the rookie very long to get on the scoresheet as she put one away in the 13th minute to open the scoring against the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.

Head Coach Mahziar Peyrow explained he was quite shocked with her performance this past weekend.

“She was recommended to me later in the recruiting season by the Edmonton Scottish Angels coach. She has been performing very well at training, but she unleashed something in her this weekend. I’m definitely excited to see what else she can do.”

Anthony and the Queens will be back in action for their home opener against the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings which will tee up a very important game for the Polytechnic the next game as they will take on the SAIT Trojans in Calgary.

2. Benjamin House

Hometown: Red Deer, AB

Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences (2nd year)

Benjamin House started the first of many Running Room Grand Prix’s this season on a positive note as he finished in fourth place with a time of 29:23 at the Thunder Open this past weekend. This helped the Kings secure the top spot in the ACAC heading into this weekend’s meet held in Calgary.

House’s performance was even more incredible as he was ill with a sinus problem, which meant difficulty breathing. The second-year student-athlete has improved significantly since last season and has shown great determination and leadership. He is as committed to the team’s success as he is to his own individual accomplishments.

Head Coach Douglas Spicer said he is in excellent condition and surely has a great season ahead of him.

“He has ambitious goals which, if you know him, you can be confident he will reach. His leadership skills made him a great choice as captain of our Kings team this year. He continues to show great maturity for his age and is a great pleasure to work with.”

The Kings will be back on the cross-country this weekend with their meet in Calgary hosted by the SAIT Trojans. The men’s 8km race will get started following the end of the women’s race which will start at 12 pm.
