Rebels lose pre-season tilt versus Edmonton

Sep 10, 2023 | 5:34 PM

It’s not earth-shattering in the long-term, but the Edmonton Oil Kings actually beat the Red Deer Rebels on Sunday in pre-season action.

This is mostly noteworthy only because the Rebels recorded nine wins and zero losses against the Oil Kings during the 2022-23 regular season.

Ultimately, the match is warm-up #2 for the Rebels who are hoping to defend their Central Division crown come the regular 68-game schedule. They won their first exhibition game 5-4 against Calgary on Sept. 8.

Scoring summary

Quentin Bourne (2nd) got the Rebels on the board first 10:24 into the first period at the Peavey Mart Centrium.

Marshall Finnie (1st) tied things up at 15:31, but Dwayne Jean Jr. (2nd) regained the lead for Red Deer just 1:23 later, and it was 2-1 home team after 20 minutes.

Cole Miller (1st) equalized for Edmonton at 9:27 of the middle frame.

Then, Mason Finley (1st) put the visitors ahead at 15:05 while shorthanded, and Miller extended Edmonton’s lead to 4-2 with 50 seconds left in the second — his goal also came with the man advantage.

In the third, Red Deer’s Jhett Larson (1st) scored on the power play late — at 18:01 — but it was too little, too late.

Kyle Kelsey stopped 10 of 12, and Chase Wutzke made seven saves on nine shots in a shared effort for the Rebels. The Oil Kings also ran with two keepers in the win.

Red Deer outshot Edmonton 29-21, and both teams went 1/5 on the power play.

Up next for the Rebels is game three of four on their pre-season sked, Sept. 15 at home against Calgary. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. They close out exhibition play on Sept. 16 at Lethbridge.

The regular season gets underway Sept. 22 at home versus Edmonton.
