High School football rankings: Week 1

Here are the Weekly Top-10 Rankings for all four Tiers of 12-man high school football in Alberta and the 6-man rankings as well for the 2023 season.

These rankings will come out every Sunday from now up until November 6. At that time those will be the last rankings and teams will take this rank into Provincials.

The teams are slotted into Tiers based on their estimated school size by the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association. Some re-sorting of Tier’s will take place after the final official population numbers are recorded at the end of September.

Please note that games vs. US opponents, scrimmages, or tournaments are not taken into consideration for ranking or listed in the overall record of the schools.

Upset Rematch at Tier IV!

Tier IV

#9 High Prairie Renegades at #7 Valleyview Cougars

4:00 p.m., Friday, September 8, E.W. Pratt High School (High Prairie)

We’ve been waiting for this one! We know you’re probably wondering where the big colossal Tier I match-up is this week, but there are many stories in all the Tier’s of high school football and this one is intriguing at the Tier IV level.

Last season the High Prairie Renegades, based out of E.W. Pratt H.S., were cruising along with a solid .500 record in the tough Mighty Peace league having just dispatched Edson 56-18 in their final league game. All they had to do now to secure a spot in the ASAA Tier IV Provincials was beat winless Valleyview, a team they had beaten 52-6 on Oct. 6, in the playoffs the following week.

A funny thing happened on the way to another blowout, as the Cougars not only showed up but played their best football of the season and defeated the Renegades 13-6 in a tight defensive classic. That cannot have sat well with High Prairie, and they have had a whole off season to stew about it.

Now, their chance for some redemption comes right out of the gates in 2023 as they will host Valleyview on home turf this Friday.
