HotSpot mobile pay parking system launches in Red Deer Sept. 18

Aug 31, 2023 | 4:44 PM

The day is nigh that visitors to Red Deer’s downtown will no longer need coinage to pay for parking.

You still can use coins if you really want or need, but starting Sept. 18, the new HotSpot system kicks in, with a mobile app becoming your best friend to pony up for a spot to plunk your vehicle for a nice stroll or doing business downtown.

Over the coming days, Red Deerians will notice parking meters being removed, and new signs being installed in advance of the launch.

“We know change can be intimidating, but we’re confident that HotSpot makes parking easier and more convenient, and we’re excited to bring such a significant upgrade to downtown Red Deer,” said Amy Fengstad, Acting Inspections and Licensing Manager.

“We encourage people who work or visit downtown regularly to set up a free HotSpot account before September 18 so they can get acquainted with the interface and save time on their next visit. Anyone who needs assistance is invited to contact us or stop in at City Hall and our staff will be happy to help with the transition to HotSpot.”

Parking rates are not changing with this transition, though there are minor changes to some parking zones, the City says. Free parking will continue to be available after 4:30 p.m., on weekends and statutory holidays.

“With HotSpot, customers can use a free mobile app, a fast tap sign featuring a quick scan code, or a pay station to pay for parking sessions in on-street stalls and City owned lots,” the City describes.

“Twenty-one new pay stations will accept coins, Visa, MasterCard, Apple Pay, Google Pay and Interac tap. Pay station delivery was delayed but they are expected to be up and running by early October. To view the pay station locations, visit www.reddeer.ca/parkingproject.

Part of this project was funded by provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI).
