Modernization: Multipurpose Room & Bathr

Ponoka Aquaplex undergoes renovations starting Monday; temporary closure

Aug 23, 2023 | 9:38 AM

The Ponoka Aquaplex will be closed for annual maintenance and facility improvements starting on Monday.

Beginning August 28, the Town confirms the Aquaplex (5315 46 Ave.) will reopen for regular operations on Tuesday, October 3.

Work planned during the scheduled closure includes:

  • Upgrades to the multipurpose room: The space will be updated with freshly painted walls, new flooring, windows, furniture and a new audio/visual system;
  • Renovation of the bathrooms located beside the multipurpose room to be used by individuals accessing the tennis/pickleball courts and multipurpose room users;
  • Installation of a new fire monitoring system;
  • Draining, scrubbing and deep cleaning of the main pool, deep tank, hot tub, wading pool and sauna;
  • Deep cleaning of the change rooms and washrooms, including floors, walls and lockers;
  • Scrubbing and power washing the pool deck;
  • Painting throughout the facility as needed.

The Town says facility improvements are part of a multi-year modernization plan, which began in 2020. The Town has since spent more than $900,000 on Aquaplex improvements.

The Aquaplex has seen improvements like:

  • A completely refurbished and resurfaced hot tub, pool deck and wading pool;
  • Installation of a new 10-foot slide;
  • Four new five-rung ladders in the deep tank;
  • Two new HVAC units;
  • New diving platform and handrails;
  • Chemical system upgrades.

“This modernization of the Aquaplex this year will better serve users and community groups who use the multipurpose space for gatherings, birthday parties and other functions. Future upgrades to the Aquaplex will depend on future consideration and budget approval by Town council,” said Andrew Jones, Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities for the Town. “The annual Aquaplex improvements are part of the Town’s proactive maintenance program to help ensure the smooth operation of the facility throughout the year, as well as providing optimal service levels and a greatly enhanced user experience for our swimmers.”

Jones stated September is a slow time at the Aquaplex with many people away on holidays in late August and over the Labour Day weekend.

“As well, we have no school lessons and typically very few public lessons in September which is why we have scheduled the work at this time,” he said.

Aquaplex and recreation passes honoured at Lacombe pools during maintenance period

During the maintenance and facility improvements, Ponoka Aquaplex and recreation passes will be honoured at the Burman University pool in Lacombe (6730 University Drive) and the Lacombe Kinsmen Aquatic Centre (5429-53 Street).

Aquaplex office will remain open for Fall registrations

The Ponoka Aquaplex office will remain open during the maintenance period with office hours from Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the exception of statutory holidays to allow facility users to book fall swimming lessons and advanced programming.
